How to Transfer a Discord Ticket to Another Team

Transfer a Discord ticket to another category and its staff take over. Who gains and loses access, what the member sees, and what happens to a claim.

Members pick the wrong category all the time. A billing question lands in General, a staff complaint lands with the whole support team. Closing the ticket and asking the member to open a new one loses the history and annoys them. A transfer moves the ticket to the right people and keeps the conversation.

How do you transfer a ticket?

Run /ticket transfer inside the ticket and choose the category. On the dashboard, open the ticket and use Move.

  1. Open the ticket

Go to the ticket channel in Discord, or its page on the dashboard

  2. Run the transfer

/ticket transfer in Discord, or Move on the dashboard

  3. Pick the category

Any other category on the same panel

  4. Tell the member why

One line in the ticket, so the move is not a surprise

  5. Release your claim

If you claimed it, unclaim so the new team can take it

It needs a staff role with the transfer permission, or Manage Server. Staff permissions are set per role with /staff roles, so you choose which roles may move tickets. Team structure covers how to split those permissions.

What happens when you transfer?

The ticket changes hands. Here is each part.

What a transfer does

The new category's staff role
Gains access to the ticket
The old category's staff role
Loses access
The member who opened it
Keeps access. Nothing changes for them
People staff added by hand
Keep access
Roles set to see every ticket
Keep access
The conversation
Stays, in full
The channel
Moves under the new category when it can
The name
Changes only if your ticket names use the category name
The priority
Rises if the new category starts at a higher level. It never drops
A notice
Is posted in the ticket for the member to read

Before October 2026 a transfer changed the ticket's category and little else. The old team could still read it. Now the access follows the move, which is what makes the next section possible.

Can a transfer keep a ticket private?

Yes. That is the main reason to use it. Send a ticket to a category whose staff role is small, and only that team and the member remain in it.

I want to report something about one of the moderators.

Thanks for telling us. I am moving this to our HR team so it stays between you and them.

Ticket transferred. Moved to HR by Staff.

After that move, the general support role cannot open the ticket. The HR role can. The member did not have to open anything new or explain twice.

Two things decide whether it is truly private. Roles you have set to see every ticket still see it, and so does anyone with Discord's Administrator permission, because Administrator ignores channel rules on every bot. Keep those to people who should read everything.

For a ticket that should stay with one staff member, not one team, there is a second tool: private claimed tickets.

What does the member see?

A short notice, and the same ticket.

The notice reads "Ticket transferred", then "Moved to Billing by" and the staff member's name. The wording can be changed per panel. If the new category starts at a higher priority, the notice says the priority was raised.

Nothing else changes on their side. They do not get a new channel, they do not lose the history, and they do not need to repeat the question. The new team can scroll up and read everything.

What about a ticket someone has claimed?

The claim stays with the person who holds it.

A claimed ticket, transferred

The claim
Kept
The claimer's access
Kept, even if their team was removed
Where the channel sits
It stays where it is until the ticket is unclaimed
The new team
Has access, and can take it once it is unclaimed

So a full hand-over is two steps: transfer, then unclaim. If you skip the second, the ticket still shows as yours. What claiming does has the rest.

When should you transfer, and when not?

Transfer the ticket

  • The member picked the wrong category
  • Another team owns the answer
  • The matter is sensitive and should leave the main team
  • A specialist queue exists for it

Do something else

  • The member needs one more person: add them to the ticket
  • You need a quick opinion: ping a colleague in the ticket
  • The ticket is finished: close it
  • You are going off shift: unclaim it for your own team

A good rule is that a transfer changes who owns the ticket. If ownership is not changing, adding a person is lighter.

Transfers also show you where your panel is unclear. If the same wrong category keeps getting picked, rename it or add a line to its description. Ticket categories covers how to word them.

Where a transfer stops

The honest list.

Good fit

  • Moves a ticket to the right team without losing the conversation
  • Removes the old team's access, so sensitive tickets stay small
  • Works from Discord and from the dashboard
  • Free on every plan

Not the right call

  • Only between categories of the same panel. A ticket cannot change panel
  • Thread tickets get the notice and the new category, but who can see the thread does not change
  • A claimed ticket's channel does not move until it is unclaimed
  • If both categories share one staff role, access stays as it was
  • Not for a website chat or a ticket made by another bot. Those have no category
  • Roles set to see every ticket, and administrators, still see it

The thread row matters if your panel opens tickets as threads. Access in a thread is per person, so there is no team to swap. For hand-overs that must change who can read a ticket, use a panel in channel mode.

Frequently asked questions

With AI Ticket Bot, run /ticket transfer inside the ticket and pick the category it should go to, or use Move on the ticket's page in the dashboard. The ticket is handed to that category's staff role and the member sees a short notice saying where it went and who moved it.

The new category's staff role gains access and the old category's staff role loses it. The member who opened it, anyone staff added by hand, and roles set to see every ticket all keep their access. If both categories use the same staff role, nothing changes.

No. The ticket stays the same conversation in the same place for them, with the full history. They see a notice such as Moved to Billing by the staff member's name, and the new team answers in the same ticket.

The claim is kept. The staff member who claimed it keeps access even if their team was removed, and the channel stays in the place claimed tickets go until it is unclaimed. To hand it over fully, unclaim it after the transfer so the new team can pick it up.

No. A ticket can move between the categories of the panel it was opened from. It cannot change panel. If your teams sit on separate panels, put the categories that hand work to each other on the same panel.

No. Transfer is on every plan, including Free. It needs a staff role with the transfer permission, or Manage Server.
