Server at Channel Limit of 500: Why Discord Tickets Stop Opening
A Discord server holds 500 channels, and every open ticket is one. Why your ticket bot says the server is at its channel limit, and how to fix it for good.

If a ticket bot told you something like "server at channel limit of 500, clear channels to continue creating tickets", this page explains it. The first section is for members. The rest is for the people who run the server.
What does the message mean?
The server is full, and Discord refused to create one more channel. When you press a ticket button, the bot asks Discord for a new private channel. At 500 channels Discord says no, and the bot passes that on.
If you are a member, there is nothing to fix on your side. It is not a ban, a cooldown or a problem with your account. Let the staff know in a public channel, because on many bots nobody on the team is told when this happens. Then try the button again later.
What counts toward the 500?
Almost everything in the channel list.
What Discord counts
- Text channels
- Yes
- Voice and stage channels
- Yes
- Forum and announcement channels
- Yes
- Categories
- Yes, each category is one
- Open tickets in channel mode
- Yes, one each
- Threads and forum posts
- No
- Roles, members, emoji
- No, they have their own limits
There is a second limit that is easy to confuse with this one. A single category holds at most 50 channels. That one is hit far more often, and it has its own fix: what to do when a ticket category is full. If your server has well under 500 channels, the category limit is the one you reached.
Why does a ticket server reach 500?
Because tickets pile up faster than they are removed. Four patterns cause nearly every case.
| Cause | How to spot it |
|---|---|
| Tickets nobody closed | Dozens of ticket channels with no message in weeks |
| Closed tickets that are kept | A category of closed or archived ticket channels |
| A raid or a spam wave | Many tickets opened within minutes by new accounts |
| A big server with many permanent channels | Hundreds of channels before any ticket is open |
The second row depends on the bot. Some bots keep a ticket's channel after closing so staff can read it later. That feels safe, and it is the fastest way to fill a server. A bot that saves a transcript does not need the channel.
How do you fix it right now?
Get the count down. Tickets open again at once.
Close the dead tickets
Sort the ticket categories by last message and close everything that is finished
Remove closed ticket channels
If your bot keeps them, delete them once the transcript is saved
Delete channels nobody uses
Old event channels, empty voice channels, test channels
Merge thin categories
Every category you remove frees one
Test the panel
Press the ticket button yourself to confirm tickets open again
Start with the ticket categories, because that is where the count grows without anyone noticing. Closing tickets properly matters here. How to close a Discord ticket covers who can do it and what is kept.
How do you stop it happening again?
Clearing channels buys time. These four changes remove the cause.
Keep a ticket server under the limit
- Use a bot that removes the channel when a ticket closes and keeps a transcript in its place
- Turn on reminders and auto-close, so quiet tickets do not sit open for months
- Limit how many tickets one member can have open at a time
- For high volume, open tickets as private threads
The last one is the permanent fix. A thread sits inside one channel and is not counted toward the 500, so a panel in thread mode can have any number of tickets open and use a single channel.
Tickets as channels
- Each open ticket uses one of the 500
- At most 50 per category
- Staff see every ticket in the channel list
- Access can follow staff roles
- The channel is removed at close
Tickets as threads
- No ticket counts toward the 500
- No category limit applies
- Tickets sit under one channel, in its thread list
- Access is per person, not per role
- The thread is locked and archived at close
Threads trade visibility for room. Staff find tickets through the thread list, not the sidebar, and rules that give or take access by role do not apply inside a thread. For a server that sees a few tickets a day, channels are easier to work in. For one that sees hundreds, threads are what keeps it open.
What does AI Ticket Bot do at the limit?
It cannot open the ticket either, and here is exactly what happens. No bot can create channel 501.
AI Ticket Bot at 500 channels
- The member
- Sees a private notice that the ticket could not be opened
- The ticket
- Is not created, so it does not count against the member's own ticket limit
- The notice
- Is the same Category full notice used for the 50-channel limit, and it mentions 50 channels
- Staff
- Are not told. Nothing is posted to the log channel
- The overflow category
- Does not help here. A new category would be channel 501 too
Two of those rows are weaknesses, and we would rather you read them here than find them out. The notice names the category limit when the real cause is the server limit, and staff get no alert. If members say the button gives an error, check your channel count first.
What helps on our side is the design around it. A ticket's channel is removed the moment the ticket closes, with the conversation saved as a transcript, so closed tickets never use up channels. Each panel can be set to open tickets as private threads, in the panel editor under how a ticket opens. And on paid plans, auto-close clears tickets that went quiet.
What no fix can do
The honest list.
Good fit
- Clearing old tickets works at once
- Thread tickets take the limit away for that panel
- Removing channels at close keeps the count flat
Not the right call
- Nothing raises the limit. It is the same for every server
- Server boosts do not add channels
- A second category does not help when the whole server is full
- Thread tickets lose role-based access rules
- A bot that keeps closed channels will fill the server again
If the server is at 500 with few tickets open, the tickets are not the problem. The channel list is. Trim it before changing anything about the bot.

Frequently asked questions
It means the Discord server already has 500 channels, which is the most Discord allows. A ticket bot makes a new channel for each ticket, and Discord refused to make another one. The bot is reporting Discord's limit. Tickets open again as soon as the server is back under 500.
500 in total. Text channels, voice channels, forum channels, announcement channels and categories all count toward it. Separately, one category holds at most 50 channels. Threads are not counted as channels.
Yes. Discord counts each category as one channel. A server with 40 categories has already used 40 of its 500 before a single text or voice channel is counted.
No. A thread lives inside a channel and is not counted as one of the server's 500 channels. That is why a server that opens many tickets at once can switch its ticket panel to private threads and stop running into the limit. Discord has its own, higher limit on active threads.
No. The limit is set by Discord for every server and no bot, plan or boost level changes it. A bot can only help you stay under it, by removing a ticket's channel when the ticket is closed or by opening tickets as threads.
You cannot fix it yourself, and it is not about you. Tell the server's staff in a public channel that tickets are not opening because the server is at its channel limit. Once they clear some channels, press the ticket button again.
