The AI Is Paused: What Happens When a Discord AI Bot Runs Out of Tokens
When a Discord AI bot uses up its token allowance, the AI pauses and tickets keep working. What members see, when it resets, and how to make it last.

Every AI bot has a limit somewhere, because each reply costs the company running it real money. What differs between bots is what happens when you reach it. This page covers what happens on AI Ticket Bot, for the member in the ticket and for the admin behind it.
What does "The AI is paused" mean?
The server's AI has used its allowance for now, and a person will answer. If you are a member and saw this in your ticket, that is the whole story:

The AI is paused. This server has used its AI allowance for now. The team will answer you here.
Your ticket is still open and your messages are still there. Stay in it. The notice pings the staff role for your ticket, and they answer in the same place. Opening a second ticket will not bring the AI back.
What still works when the AI is paused?
Everything except the AI's replies.
While the AI is paused
- Opening tickets
- Works. Tickets are unlimited on every plan
- Staff answering
- Works
- Claiming, transferring, closing
- Works
- Transcripts
- Saved as usual
- The AI in tickets
- Paused
- AI FAQ channels
- Paused. Questions there get no answer
- /ai ask
- Says the AI is out of tokens for now
- Website chat
- The AI stops, and a chat that became a ticket is handed to staff
One detail is worth knowing. The notice in a ticket appears when the AI was already answering in that ticket and had to stop. A ticket opened while the AI is paused gets the normal welcome message and no AI reply, so staff should watch new tickets during a pause.
What counts against the allowance?
Every reply the AI writes, wherever it writes it. The allowance is counted in tokens, the unit AI providers bill in. A longer conversation uses more.
There are two allowances and they work together.
The two allowances
- Daily
- A share of the month that one day can use. It stops a single busy day from spending everything
- Monthly
- The total for the month. This is the number plans are compared by
On the Free plan, at the time of writing in October 2026, the AI answers more than 300 average tickets a month. Premium is more than 2,000 and Pro more than 11,000. Those went up sharply when the default model became Claude Haiku 5.5, because each ticket now costs far fewer tokens. The pricing page has the current figures.
Tickets, AI FAQ channels, /ai ask, the website chat and training the AI all draw from the same allowance. A server that connects its own AI provider on Pro is the exception: its replies are billed by that provider and do not count.
When does the AI come back?
By itself, when the allowance resets.
Resets
- Daily allowance
- Starts again at midnight UTC
- Monthly allowance
- Starts again at the end of the monthly period. /ai usage shows when
- Paused tickets
- The AI returns to them within about 15 minutes of a reset
- After adding tokens or upgrading
- The AI returns right away
/ai usage shows both allowances: how much is used, how much is left, and the exact reset time for each. It also shows the model the server is on and any extra tokens it holds.
The first time a server reaches its limit, we add a one-time gift of extra tokens so the AI keeps answering, and send a direct message explaining what happened. It is given once per server. The next time, the AI pauses as described here.
How do you make the allowance last?
Spend fewer tokens per ticket before buying more tokens. In order of effect:
Stay on the default model
A Sonnet model costs ten times as much per ticket, or more. Check /ai model
Teach the AI
A taught AI answers in fewer replies, because it does not have to ask or guess
Let staff take over cleanly
Once a person is handling a ticket, the AI does not need to keep replying
Switch the AI off where it is not needed
Applications and reports rarely need an AI answer
Stop spam tickets
Every junk ticket the AI answers spends allowance
The first row matters most. If a server moved to a heavier model and now runs out mid-month, moving back is the whole fix. Choosing a model explains the trade.
The second is the one most servers skip. An AI that does not know your rules asks questions, guesses, and hands over late. Training it shortens every conversation. For the last row, see how to stop spam tickets.
Should you buy tokens or upgrade?
A token pack
- A one-time top-up
- Used only after the plan's own tokens
- Does not expire
- Fits a rare busy month
A bigger plan
- A larger allowance every month
- Raises the daily allowance too
- Adds features as well as tokens
- Fits a server that runs out most months
A simple test: if the AI paused once because of an event or a launch, a pack covers it. If it pauses every month, the server has outgrown the plan and a pack is the expensive way to keep going.
There is a third option on Pro. A server can connect its own AI provider, and then the AI's replies no longer use the plan's allowance at all.
What the limit does not do
The honest list.
Good fit
- Tickets never stop. Only the AI's replies do
- No charge for going over
- The AI comes back by itself
- Extra tokens do not expire
Not the right call
- The AI does not answer in the meantime, so staff carry the tickets
- A ticket opened during a pause gets no notice about the AI
- AI FAQ channels go quiet with no message
- The admin is not sent an alert each time the limit is reached. Check /ai usage
- The ticket figures are averages. Long conversations use more
The fourth limit is the one to plan around. If your server relies on the AI answering at night, look at /ai usage once a week. An allowance that is nearly spent by early evening is a sign to change something before members notice.

Frequently asked questions
It means the server has used its AI allowance for now, so the AI cannot write more replies until the allowance resets or the server adds tokens. Your ticket is still open and the server's staff will answer you in it. You do not need to open a new one.
The most common reason is that the server reached its daily or monthly AI allowance. Run /ai usage to check. If the allowance is not used up, look at whether the AI was switched off for that ticket or category, or whether a staff member replied, which hands the ticket to staff on many setups.
On AI Ticket Bot the daily allowance starts again at midnight UTC. The monthly one starts again at the end of the monthly period, and /ai usage shows the exact time for both. After a reset the AI returns to paused tickets within about 15 minutes.
No. Tickets are unlimited on every plan. Members can still open them, staff can still answer, and everything is saved as usual. Only the AI's replies stop until the allowance resets or tokens are added.
No. There is no charge for going over. The AI pauses. If you want it back before the reset you can buy a token pack or move to a bigger plan, and both are your choice.
No. Extra tokens are used only after the plan's own allowance is reached, and they do not expire. What is left carries into the next month.
