Discord Bot Blacklist: Block a Member Without Banning Them

A Discord bot blacklist blocks someone from tickets and the AI without a ban. How it differs from a ban, a timeout and AutoMod words, and when the AI blocks.

Six different things go by "blacklist" on Discord, and the wrong one either lets a problem continue or punishes someone too hard. This guide sorts them out, then shows how AI Ticket Bot's blacklist works, including what the AI may do on its own.

What does blacklist mean on Discord?

It depends on who is doing the blocking.

What people call itWhat it stopsWho runs it
A bot's blacklistOpening tickets and using that bot, in one serverYour staff
A banBeing in the server at allMods with Ban Members
A timeoutSending messages, reacting and voice, for up to 28 daysMods with Timeout Members
AutoMod blocked wordsMessages that contain words you listedDiscord, by your rules
A shared RP blacklistJoining any server that signed up to the listA group of communities
A bot-wide blockUsing that bot in any serverThe bot's makers

Most Discord ticket bots keep a blacklist of their own, and that first row is what this page is about. The last row is the makers' own list, for accounts or servers that broke the bot's terms. It is not yours to manage.

Blacklist, ban or timeout: which should you use?

Pick the smallest tool that stops the behaviour.

Which one fits

Joke or spam tickets, but fine in chat
Blacklist
Abusing the AI or flooding the AI FAQ channel
Blacklist
Heated in general chat and needs to cool off
Timeout
Breaking rules everywhere and should not be here
Ban
The same slur or scam link keeps appearing
AutoMod blocked words

The member who opens ten tickets asking for free roles is often fine everywhere else. Blocking their tickets fixes the problem and keeps them in the community.

A ban goes much further: the member leaves, AI Ticket Bot closes their open tickets by default, and they cannot open one to appeal. A ban appeal server covers where appeals go instead. When members report someone to you, the report belongs in a ticket: see report tickets.

How do you blacklist someone with AI Ticket Bot?

Run /blacklist, pick the member or role, and choose how long.

  1. Run /blacklist

In any channel. Only you see the list

  2. Pick who to block

A member, or a role. A role blocks everyone who holds it

  3. Choose how long

A day, a week, a month, three months, a year, or forever

  4. Add a reason

Optional. Write it for the next moderator

Anyone with Manage Server or Administrator can do this, and so can any staff role you give the Manage the blacklist permission in /staff roles. The Moderator quick setup includes it. Discord staff roles covers splitting permissions.

The dashboard has the same list under Settings, Blocked. The blacklist is free on every plan and applies to one server. Blocking a muted role is the version that scales: stopping spam tickets explains why.

What can a blacklisted member still do?

Everything except open tickets and use the AI.

What a blacklist blocks

Opening a ticket
Blocked. They see "You cannot open tickets in this server"
A ticket staff open for them
Blocked too
The AI FAQ channels
The AI ignores them, without a word
A ticket they already have open
Stays open until someone closes it
Your website chat
Not covered. It does not check the Discord blacklist
Chat, voice and roles
Untouched. It is not a mute

The bot sends the member no message when you block them, and never shows them your reason. If they should know why, tell them yourself.

When does the AI blacklist someone by itself?

Only after two clear warnings, and only for real abuse. In a ticket, the AI can block the member it is talking to when three things hold: it gave two warnings naming the behaviour and the consequence, the behaviour continued, and it is spam, repeated insults, attempts to manipulate the AI, a scam or deliberate ticket flooding. This is the default. You teach it nothing.

Second warning: keep this up and you will be blocked from tickets in this server.

If it carries on, the member is blocked and the ticket closes like any other, with a transcript. Their close notice reads "Closed after repeated abusive behavior that continued despite warnings." and does not mention a block. The AI usually blocks for a week to a month, longer only for severe or repeated abuse.

It never blocks for disagreement, impatience, frustration, one rude message, swearing at nobody in particular, a language it does not understand, repeated questions about a real problem, sarcasm or a low-effort ticket. Never a member with a staff role or Manage Server, and never anyone but the member it is talking to, so nobody can talk it into blocking someone else. Threats and harassment go to your staff instead: a threat of harm as urgent, harassment as high priority. What AI cannot do in support lists its other limits.

Can the AI blacklist people in an AI FAQ channel?

Yes, since the October 2026 release, with the same two-warning rule. AI FAQ channels are the public channels where the AI answers questions outside tickets, set up with /ai channel. Until now the AI there could only look up channels.

Now it can also check the asking member's own roles when the answer depends on them, such as whether they should see a members-only channel. And it can block that member after two warnings, for the same kinds of abuse. Its reply to that message is their last, and it does not announce the block. From then on the AI ignores them in every AI FAQ channel, and they cannot open tickets.

For threats or harassment it never blocks there: it points the member to a ticket, where your staff judge it. The AI FAQ channel guide covers the setup.

In /ai ask the AI can check roles too, but never blocks anyone: only staff can use it, and it never blocks staff.

How do you remove someone from the blacklist?

Press Unblock next to their name in /blacklist, or in the dashboard's Blocked list. A timed block ends by itself.

Blocks made by the AI sit in the same list, shown as blocked by the bot, with a reason that starts with [AI]. They come off the same way. Every block and unblock is in the audit log. Check the list now and then: a block made in an AI FAQ channel is posted nowhere else.

How do you blacklist words on Discord?

With Discord's AutoMod, not with a ticket bot. AI Ticket Bot does not filter words. Its blacklist works on members and roles.

AutoMod lives in your server settings. Add your own list of words, or turn on Discord's ready-made lists of commonly flagged words. On a match, AutoMod can block the message, alert your moderators in a channel, or time the member out. It checks every channel you do not exempt, ticket channels included. Use both: AutoMod catches the word, the blacklist catches the person who keeps opening tickets to type it.

How do RP servers use a blacklist?

Usually as a list of players barred from several servers at once, kept by the communities themselves. Being blacklisted can also mean barred from whitelist applications, or from a faction or job in the game.

A shared list is an agreement between communities, not a Discord or bot feature. AI Ticket Bot's blacklist is per server: an entry in one does nothing in another, so each server adds its own. If you keep a shared list, write every reason as plain fact, since the player may read it on appeal, and give them a way to appeal. For support on a GTA RP server, see the FiveM ticket bot guide.

Blacklisted as a player? Ask that server's staff how they take appeals. Many use a separate appeal server.

Where a blacklist stops

Good fit

  • Stops ticket spam and AI abuse without banning anyone
  • Blocks one member or everyone with a role
  • Free on every plan

Not the right call

  • One server only. It does not follow the member to your other servers
  • Blocking someone yourself leaves their open ticket open
  • Your website chat does not check it
  • It does not filter words. That is AutoMod's job
  • The member is not told why

Frequently asked questions

It is a list of members a bot refuses to serve in one server. On a ticket bot, a blacklisted member cannot open tickets, and on AI Ticket Bot they cannot use the AI either. They stay in the server and can still chat, so it is lighter than a ban or a timeout.

No. A ban removes the member from the server and stops them rejoining with that account. A bot blacklist keeps them in the server and only stops what that bot does for them, such as opening tickets. Use a blacklist when the problem is ticket or AI abuse and the member is otherwise fine.

Anyone with Manage Server or Administrator, and any staff role given the Manage the blacklist permission in /staff roles. The Moderator quick setup includes it. Owners and Manage Server holders can also block people from the dashboard, under Settings, Blocked. It is free on every plan.

Yes, but only after two clear warnings that name the behaviour and the consequence, and only if the behaviour continues and is spam, repeated insults, a scam, attempts to manipulate the AI or deliberate flooding. It never blocks staff, and never blocks for frustration, disagreement or one rude message. In a ticket, the ticket then closes. Since October 2026 it can do the same in AI FAQ channels.

Use Discord's AutoMod in your server settings. Add your own list of words, or turn on the ready-made lists of commonly flagged words, and choose whether a match blocks the message, alerts your moderators or times the member out. AI Ticket Bot does not filter words: its blacklist works on members and roles.

No. AI Ticket Bot's blacklist is per server, so a member blocked in one server can still open tickets in another until you block them there too. Shared blacklists between RP servers are agreements between communities, kept outside Discord and outside the bot.
