Discord Ticket Category Full: The 50-Channel Limit and Overflow Categories

A Discord category holds 50 channels, so the 51st ticket fails. What members see, how an overflow category works, and when threads are the better fix.

The limit belongs to Discord, not to any bot. Every Discord ticket bot that opens tickets as channels runs into it on a busy day, and the way it shows up is always the same: a member presses the ticket button and no ticket appears.

What happens when a ticket category is full?

The ticket is not created, and only the member who pressed the button finds out. Discord refuses the new channel, so the bot has nowhere to put the ticket.

On AI Ticket Bot the member gets this, visible to them alone:

Category full. The ticket category has hit Discord's 50-channel limit. Ask an admin to clean up closed tickets, move the panel to a different category, or enable category cloning in /ticket settings (Premium).

Three things follow from that. The refused ticket does not count against the member's own ticket limit, so they can try again the moment there is room. Nothing is posted in your staff channels. And nothing is written to the ticket log, so if no member tells you, you will not know.

The same message appears when the whole server has reached 500 channels, because Discord refuses the channel in the same way.

Why is the category full in the first place?

Almost always because finished tickets were never closed. With channel tickets, closing deletes the channel and gives the place back. Fifty channels in a ticket category means fifty conversations are open at this moment, or something else is sitting in there.

What is filling the categoryHow to tellWhat to do
Finished tickets nobody closedLast message is days oldClose them, in bulk from the dashboard's ticket list
Channels that are not ticketsA rules or info channel inside the categoryMove them to another category
Tickets abandoned by the memberStaff answered, member never came backTurn on the inactivity close
A real queue of 50 open ticketsEvery ticket is activeThreads or an overflow category

Only the last row needs more room. The first three need a tidier queue, and adding room to an untidy queue gives you a hundred stale tickets where you had fifty. Closing a ticket covers the bulk close, and auto-close settings covers the inactivity close.

What is an overflow category?

A second category the bot creates by itself when the first one is full, so the 51st ticket still opens. Some bots call it cloning the category.

Here is how it works on AI Ticket Bot.

The overflow category, fact by fact

Setting
"Clone category when channel limit is reached", in /ticket settings
Starts as
Off. An admin has to turn it on
Plans
Premium, Pro and Enterprise
Applies to
Panels that open tickets as channels inside a category
Name
Your category's name with a number: Support_2, then Support_3
Which one is used
The first category with room, starting from the original
Permissions
The new category is created empty. Each ticket still gets its own
When it empties
It stays, and is reused the next time the first one fills

Because the bot always fills the first category with room, tickets move back to the original as soon as places free up. The overflow is used on busy days and sits empty on quiet ones. The bot does not delete it, and you can leave it where it is.

Two details to know before you rely on it. The new category appears wherever Discord puts a new category, which is the bottom of the channel list, so drag it next to the first one once. And the name comes from your own category name. If Discord refuses that name for a new category, the bot does not invent another one and the member gets the Category full message.

Should you use threads instead?

If you hit 50 open tickets often, yes. A thread lives inside a channel and takes no place in the category, so a panel that opens tickets as private threads cannot fill one.

Channel tickets

  • Each ticket is a channel in the category
  • 50 open at once per category
  • Easy to see in the channel list
  • Closed tickets are deleted

Thread tickets

  • Each ticket is a private thread under one channel
  • No category limit. Discord allows 1,000 active threads per server
  • Quiet threads drop out of the channel list
  • Closed tickets are locked and kept

Neither side is the better one in general. Channel tickets are easier for staff to see, which is why most servers start there. Thread tickets scale further and keep the channel list short. On AI Ticket Bot the choice is per panel, so a busy support panel can use threads while a small appeals panel stays on channels. What a ticket bot is goes through the two modes in more detail.

One caution with threads: the member has to be able to see the channel the threads live under. If they cannot, the bot refuses the ticket and tells them why.

How do you fix a full category today?

Free a place first, then decide whether you need more room. The order matters, because the first two steps cost nothing and are usually enough.

  1. Close what is finished

Open the dashboard's ticket list, find the oldest tickets, and close everything that is answered. Each close deletes a channel and frees a place

  2. Move what is not a ticket

Drag any ordinary channel out of the ticket category

  3. Test the button

Press the panel button yourself. If your ticket opens, the problem was the queue

  4. Add room if the queue is real

Turn on the overflow category on a paid plan, or switch the panel to thread mode on any plan

  5. Stop it coming back

Turn on the inactivity close so abandoned tickets do not hold places

There is one more route that works on every plan. Each ticket category on a panel can be sent to its own Discord category. Billing tickets in one and reports in another gives you 50 places for each. Ticket categories covers how to set where each one goes.

What the overflow does not do

The honest list, for AI Ticket Bot.

Good fit

  • Tickets keep opening on your busiest day with nobody awake to fix it
  • The original category is always filled first, so the overflow stays small
  • Every ticket keeps its own permissions, whichever category it lands in

Not the right call

  • It is not on the free plan, and it is off until you turn it on
  • You cannot choose the overflow category yourself. The bot creates and names it
  • It does not copy permissions set on the first category
  • It cannot pass Discord's limit of 500 channels in a server
  • Staff are not told when a member is refused because a category is full

The last line is the one to plan around. A full category is silent on your side, so on the free plan the protection is a queue that never gets near 50. If you would rather not depend on that, threads remove the limit on every plan.

Frequently asked questions

Fifty. A Discord category holds at most 50 channels of any kind, and a whole server holds at most 500. A ticket bot that opens each ticket as a channel inside one category can therefore keep at most 50 tickets open there at the same time, fewer if other channels share the category.

It is a second category the bot creates when the first one is full, so new tickets still open. On AI Ticket Bot it is named after your own category with a number on the end, such as Support_2, and the bot fills the first category that has room before it creates another. It is a paid feature and it is off until an admin turns it on.

The ticket is not created. On AI Ticket Bot the member who pressed the button sees a private message titled Category full, which tells them to ask an admin. Nothing is posted for staff and nothing is written to the log, so the first sign is usually a member saying the button does not work.

No. A thread lives inside a channel and does not take one of the category's 50 places. A panel set to open tickets as private threads never fills a category. Discord has a separate ceiling of 1,000 active threads per server, which very few servers reach.

Close tickets that are finished, because closing a channel ticket deletes its channel and frees the place. Move channels that are not tickets out of the category. If the queue really does hold 50 open tickets, switch the panel to thread mode or point some ticket categories at a different Discord category.

On AI Ticket Bot the new category is created empty, without the permission settings of the first one. That does not expose tickets, because every ticket channel carries its own permissions for the opener and your staff roles. It does mean anything you set on the first category itself, such as a muted role, is not on the new one.
